What's Actually in Your Skincare? A No-Nonsense Guide to Reading Ingredient Lists
You picked up a moisturiser, flipped it over, and understood absolutely nothing.
Congratulations. You're a normal human being.
Skincare ingredient lists read like a chemistry exam that nobody asked for. And that's not an accident. Long, complicated lists make products feel scientific and premium. They also make it very hard to know what you're actually putting on your skin. Funny that.
So let's fix that, shall we?
Ingredients are listed by concentration. This is the most useful thing you'll learn today.
Everything on that list goes from highest to lowest concentration. The first five or so ingredients make up the bulk of the product. Everything after that is present in increasingly tiny amounts.
So if water (aqua) is first, congratulations โ you're mostly buying water. If that miracle active ingredient they've plastered all over the front of the packaging is listed last? There's barely a whisper of it in there. You're welcome.
What the long names actually mean.
Most ingredients use an INCI name, the international standardised name used across the industry. They sound like they belong in a Breaking Bad episode, but they're often just Latin or scientific names for things you'd recognise immediately.
Butyrospermum Parkii is shea butter. Simmondsia Chinensis is jojoba. Aloe Barbadensis is aloe vera.
They didn't need to make it this complicated. They chose to.
The alcohols question. Because someone always asks.
Not all alcohols are the same, and this one genuinely matters.
Ethanol and isopropyl alcohol are the drying, irritating kind that have no business being in a moisturiser. But fatty alcohols like Cetearyl Alcohol, Behenyl Alcohol, and Cetyl Alcohol are a completely different thing entirely. They're plant-derived and act as emollients, helping your skin stay soft and hold onto moisture.
At Tree Fairy, any alcohol in our ingredient lists is a plant-derived fatty alcohol. Our products are 100% vegan, so there are no animal-derived ingredients of any kind. Yes, we get asked. No, we don't mind.
What to actually watch out for.
Synthetic fragrances are one of the most common skin irritants going around, and they're often hiding behind the single word "fragrance" or "parfum" with zero further detail. If you have sensitive or reactive skin, that's worth knowing.
The honest truth is that not every synthetic ingredient is bad, and not every natural ingredient is automatically good. What matters is the whole formulation and whether it actually works for your skin, not whether the packaging has a leaf on it.
Why we keep it simple.
At Tree Fairy, we use plant-based ingredients that do what they're supposed to do. No unnecessary fillers, no synthetic fragrances, no ingredients that are there purely to make the list look impressive. We also use big dollops of the good stuff like organic rosehip oil and organic grapeseed oil. So we are highly effective, not token ingredients.ย
We're vegan, palm-oil-free, and made in small batches because quality matters more than volume. Not a beauty standard, self-proclaimed influencer, or gender role in sight.
Just healthy skin, whatever that looks like for you.
